Keweenaw National Historical Park - General Park Information

From 7,000 years ago to the 1900s people mined Keweenaw copper. Native peoples made copper into tools and trade items. Investors and immigrants arrived in the 1800s in a great mineral rush, developing thriving industries and cosmopolitan communities. Though the mines have since closed, their mark is still visible on the land and people.

During Summer, the National Park Service operates a visitor information desk at the Quincy Mine Hoist Association Gift Shop located along U.S. Highway 41, north of Hancock, Michigan. Information on the park can be obtained year round from the park headquarters, located in Calumet, Michigan.

Most of the heritage sites close for the winter by late October and reopen for the summer in late May. Contact the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau, (888) 646-6784 for specific details.

Summer and early Fall are the primary seasons for visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly from Memorial Day to the end of the Fall color season in mid October. While most of the Keweenaw Heritage Sites are closed, area winter activities such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing are popular from late November through the end of March.

Fees & Reservations

Keweenaw National Historical Park does not have a park entrance fee. However, many of the Keweenaw Heritage Sites, the park's partners, charge either an activity or entrance fee or request a donation for visiting their site.
